July Community Initiative of the Month – QPOC Winnipeg

For the month of July, our Community Initiative of the Month is QPOC Winnipeg!

QPOC Winnipeg’s goal is to provide Winnipeg’s Queer and Trans Black, Indigenous and People Of Colour, with safer spaces, resources, and a support network that recognizes the unique experiences and needs of the QTBIPOC community. From dance parties, and open mic nights, to potlucks and sharing coffee with a fellow QTBIPOC, they are there.

We asked one of the founders of QPOC Winnipeg, Uzoma Chioma, to share with us more about the heart behind QPOC so we can get to know them and the work they do in Winnipeg better. Take a read below!

Tell us about how QPOC Winnipeg came to be.

QPOC started in 2014 with myself and a couple of Black and Queer friends. We realized there were no spaces created where Queer/Trans Black, Indigenous and people of colour could gather as community and have their identities and unique experiences centred. There was also a complete lack of constructive dialogue surrounding racism and discrimination that exists within the 2SLGBTQ* community. We decided to create those safer spaces and opportunities for important critical dialogue to address these issues and uplift 2sQTBIPOC TBIPOC – Two Spirit, Queer|Trans, Black, Indigenous & people of colour community.

Tell us more about how you support your community.

We host safer space based events that explicitly center the needs of 2sQTBIPOC. Everything from dance parties to open mic nights where we feature local and international artists. We provide support for asylum seeking queer refugees, we provide training, education and workshops for schools, organizations and businesses. We host DJ workshops, provide advocacy, partner to host conferences, community coffees and potlucks, have a chest binder fund for community members who cannot access a chest binder on their own, we partnered with Sunshine House to establish an emergency food security fund and to host fundraisers that provide direct support to community members. And so much more 🙂

How has covid-19 caused QPOC to shift their offerings for the QTBIPOC community in Winnipeg?

We’ve been unable to host our monthly events. This has been a big loss in terms of consistent opportunity for community to connect and gather. We have been able to get creative and through strong partnership with the University of Manitoba Institute for the Humanities, engage community through the arts and provide direct financial support for projects developed under a specific theme.  We continue to reach out to folks directly, using social media as a way to stay engaged and recently hosted a community coffee, with free coffee and snacks, to encourage folks to connect and meet outdoors with community. As public health orders continue to loosen we’ll create more safer opportunities for community.

For the month of July, Jenna Rae Cakes will be donating 5% of all cupcake sales to QPOC Winnipeg. To learn more about QPOC Winnipeg, click here. Be sure to follow QPOC on Instagram as well!

Charity of the Month

Our Charity of the Month for June is Made With Love Winnipeg. Made With Love Winnipeg is an initiative by Chef Ben Kramer to address food insecurity in a time where covid-19 is restricting access to food for many individuals in Winnipeg. We asked Chef Ben Kramer some questions about the inspiration behind Made With Love Winnipeg and more to learn about this wonderful opportunity to serve people in our own community.

Q: Tell us about your inspiration to start Made with Love Winnipeg?
A: We’ve been working with the Community Food Centres of Canada for quite a few years. We think the work they are doing is incredible. We have a food centre here in Winnipeg (Norwest). The Made with Love concept is one that was/is quite successful in Toronto and we decided that there is no reason it wouldn’t be here. Winnipegers are extremely generous. We decided to give it a shot and Winnipeggers stepped up and helped make it happen with their donations.

Q: Why is this something you are passionate about?
A: I believe that food is a basic human right.
Feeding people is love as a verb.
In this time of uncertainty, it’s imperative that we take care of our neighbours who are the most vulnerable.
We have the skills to do this effectively and with that comes the responsibility to respond to this need.

Q: Which local organizations will are the meals being distributed through?
A: We are currently distributing food through Main Street Project and Norwest Community Food Centre. If donations keep rolling in and we are able to continue this project we intend to expand our reach.

Q: How many meals have you been able to provide so far?
A: We just started. Our first week we did 160 meals and our second week we are up to 200.

Q: How long do you plan to continue running Made with Love Winnipeg?
A: We plan on continuing as long as we can. We’ve raised enough money to continue for a few months and if donations keep coming in we will go indefinitely.

Made With Love Winnipeg has developed a high-quality, nutritious take-home meal menu that will be prepared using the highest food safety standards. These meals will be distributed through several Winnipeg organizations that are on the frontlines in trying to help communities during the COVID-19 and ever-deepening food insecurity crisis. Your support will ensure that our neighbours in need will have safe access to healthy food. Your charitable donation (big or small) will go a long way to getting good food to those who need it most.

Learn more about Made With Love Winnipeg by clicking HERE.

Throughout the month of June, $1 from the sale of every box of cupcakes will be donated to Made With Love Winnipeg.

Congratulations 2020 Grads!

Let us be the first to say Congrats to all those graduating this year! We understand that graduation most likely isn’t what you thought it would be. That instead of celebrating with your classmates, friends and family at a big celebration, it looks more like small gatherings with fewer people than you imagined. While the celebration may look different, the reason to celebrate is just as amazing as ever– graduation!

Celebrate the graduate in your life for all of their tenacity and hard work that led to this exciting milestone with our Graduation Celebration Cupcakes! Our Graduation Celebration Cupcakes come in boxes of 6 or 12 and feature our delicious, decadent cupcakes in flavours of chocolate and vanilla. Each cupcake is topped with a combination of our signature salted caramel macarons splattered with gold, gold-edged grey sugar blossoms and a fondant grad cap with scroll.

Our Graduation Celebration Cupcakes are $35 for a box of 6 or $65 for a box of 12. Graduation Celebration Cupcakes but must pre-ordered in advance with one to two days notice before the date you’d like to pick them up. You can email [email protected] to place your order or call 1-204-691-4222 between 9am and 5pm Tuesday through Saturday.

To all the graduates, congratulations! From all of us at Jenna Rae Cakes, we wish you the best of luck as you take your new skills and put them to use in the world.

Charity of the Month

Our Charity of the Month of May is Winnipeg Harvest!

Winnipeg Harvest and its partner organizations are front-line responders during this coronavirus crisis. With schools and businesses closing, job and wage losses, vulnerable and isolated adults, the demand for food in local communities across the province is steadily increasing, and their capacity to respond is decreasing. Winnipeg Harvest is continuing to operate as best as possible to ensure our neighbours have enough food to eat during this uncertain time.

$1 from every box of cupcakes sold on SkipTheDishes will be donated directly to Winnipeg Harvest for the duration of May. Winnipeg Harvest needs our support more than ever to keep their warehouse open and food flowing and we know the generosity of Winnipegers will ensure that Winnipeg Harvest can provide at this time when people in our communities need it most.

Thank you for partnering with us to support Winnipeg Harvest throughout the month of May!

Covid-19 Cake Orders

Celebrations look different these days. With our inability to gather in groups and with the continued encouragement to stay home, celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special occasions at home can feel like it lacks the lustre of a bigger party, an outing or inviting friends over. While you may be celebrating at home with those you live with, we believe these occasions are still worthy of a sweet treat to celebrate– even if it’s a small celebration at home while calling friends and loved ones over FaceTime, Skype, Zoom or HouseParty to celebrate virtually.

In light of the number of requests we’ve received to offer cakes at this time so people can celebrate at home with the ones they live with, we’ve decided to open up our cake department again offering a simplified menu of cakes for your celebrations. Please take a look below at the flavours and design options. If you’d like to place an order, please note that we are only accepting a very limited number of cakes each week so we recommend placing your order as early as possible to avoid disappointment. Cakes will be able to be picked up on Thursday, Friday and Saturday only at our shop on Academy from noon until 5 pm.

For more information or to place your order please email [email protected] and our customer service team will get back to you as soon as they are able. For more information on the flavours of cakes being offered, visit the Covid Cakes page of our website

How We Are Keeping Busy Indoors

As we all spend more time indoors, we are looking for fun and creative ways to keep ourselves, and even our little ones, engaged and having fun. Group activities, dinner parties and other gatherings may be cancelled but we are finding ways to keep ourselves and our families entertained and having fun. Here’s what you can find team JRC doing while we have fun social distancing.

Baking

“We made banana bread, and spend a lot of our time cooking, trying to work from home with 2 kids, and playing “balloon”, where Leo and I/Trev keep a balloon in the air as long as we can. So far our top score is 78 hits! I’m also making a scavenger hunt for Leo to find a Hot Chocolate Bomb” – Ashley

Picture below is our Jenna Rae Cakes Banana Bread Party Square recipe. We can’t share it quite yet due to something really exciting coming later this year! We’ll let your imagination fill in the blank!

Learning a New Language

“I am going to start quilting a baby blanket for my friend who just had a baby. I’ve had the fabric before he was born but never had the time to make it, so I guess it’s the time! I started a free language course on coursera.org to learn a new language. I use the app Houseparty to video chat with my friends and play quick games together. Doing free Zumba classes on Instagram LIVE with my favourite instructors. Baking whatever I’m craving and giving it to my family and leaving the rest at my friends’ doorstep.” – Amirah

PVR Catch Up

“Honestly! My fav thing to do at home is watching my million pvr’d shows (always behind full seasons of shows) and let the commercials run so I can clean my house during them! It kind of makes it a fun game. We also just added a new puppy, Pepper, into the furry fam so he has been keeping us super busy in quarantine!” – Rebecca

Colouring Books

“I love working on colouring books. It makes me relax and become creative. My favourite is the enchanted forest by Johanna Basford.” – Beatriz

Napping Anytime

“Catching up on things that needed to be done, finally doing a puzzle we’ve had for years, walking our dog Molly, reading new books, and napping anytime we feel like it (nothing stopping us now!).” – Jordain

Cooking + Baking

“One of my favourite things to do is bake & cook always trying new recipes!” – Leah

“I’ve been cooking and baking a lot! Both my parents are super busy with work right now, so I’m in charge of making all the meals for our family of 6! I absolutely love to cook/bake so I was more than happy to help out! I really miss JRC so I decided to make mini egg macarons, cookie sandwiches and edible cotton candy cookie dough with our signature flavouring!” – Kaitlyn

Settling In

“I’ve mostly been unboxing/organizing/cleaning every room in our new house … finally lol and watching A LOT of movies!” – Taylor

Picking Up Old Hobbies

“I’ve been practicing piano, ukulele and singing a lot! It’s nice to revisit hobbies you don’t get to do so often. Plus, you feel so accomplished when you nail a song!” – Noah

Organizing + Crafting

“I’ve been passing the time going through boxes of art supplies that I’ve had in storage. I’ve moved 8 times since my School of art days, so I can finally take the time to unpack my hoarded projects and finish some. Starting with a bookbinding technique that I wanted to try out!” – Jana

Team JRC is doing our part to flatten the curve by staying home and finding fun ways to pass the time and we hope you are, too! We are all in this together.
