For the month of June, our Community Initiative of the Month is Sunshine House!
Sunshine House is a community drop-in and resource centre focusing on harm reduction and social inclusion, working to provide programming that fulfills people’s social, community, and recreational needs. Participants can come as they are, and are not expected to be “clean” or sober.
Sunshine House runs a number of incredible programs including the afternoon drop-in, a twice-weekly afternoon space for community members to come in for a cup of coffee, meal, conversation and fun activities. Monday and Wednesday evenings, Sunshine House hosts Like That, a program that provides a space where members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community can gather fun, skills-building and recreation. Like That is home to the drag performance troupe the Sunshine Bunch. Sunshine House also hosts brunch on Sundays from 11-1, where community members can enjoy eggs, bacon, toast and coffee for just $2 (kids 12 and under are free!). Sunshine House also runs a foot care program called Street Feet.
On any given day, people who attend Sunshine House can access a hot meal and harm reduction supplies, as well as a shower and laundry facilities. Sunshine House also maintains a small clothing closet for community use.
A portion of sales from all cupcakes at Academy, The Forks, Island Lakes (once open) and over SkipTheDishes will be donated to Sunshine House throughout the month of June. To learn more about Sunshine House, click here.
