For November 2022, JRC is Giving Back to Wahbung Abinoonjiiag!
Wahbung Abinoonjiiag is a domestic violence prevention, crisis and healing centre, established in 1994 to empower children and their families to end the cycle of violence. Wahbung Abinoonjiiag (Children of Tomorrow) is an Indigenous non-profit organization, providing opportunities for holistic healing and support for families to thrive through culturally-relevant programs, services and advocacy.
Their dynamic team of staff and volunteers deliver programs and services for children, youth, individuals and families who have been impacted by violence.
Their vision is to have a place and a time where children and their families can live free of violence, and unrestrained by the impact of violence. Their mission is to develop and maintain the Villages of Wahbung Abinoonjiiag that will wrap around our children and their families and nurture their healing and well-being so that they can take their rightful places in the world and the future.
This year,
Wahbung Abinoonjiiag's holiday initiative, "A Very COVID Christmas… AGAIN (hopefully for the last time)"
will see the distribution of more than 200 holiday care packages of varying sizes for individuals and families, including: a holiday meal; basic needs and personal care items; and gifts for each member of the family. Not only will they be providing family hampers, they are also providing care packages for those in the community who are unsheltered or do not have security in shelter providing cold weather supplies like blankets and food items that don't require kitchen equipment or utensils.
Community care packages (hampers) has proven to be the safest and most effective means of community outreach, while enabling families to access basic needs services. With your support, the Wahbung
Abinoonjiiag community will be able to continue their impactful work and will be able to shop for, pack and deliver community care packages that include: emergency food; snacks; children, youth and adult activity packages; bannock in a bag making kits; wellness packages; personal care and hygiene packages; basic household cleaning kits; cold weather supplies and inspirational messages from their Wahbung Abinoonjiiag family. Over the past year, they have distributed more than 10,000 community care packages in the community.
Aside from their Christmas hamper initiative, their most urgent needs at the moment are new/unused cold weather supplies (gloves, hats, handwarmers, etc.) and personal hygiene items (shampoo/conditioner, soap, deodorant, etc.).
