At Jenna Rae Cakes, we’re big believers that making life sweet goes far beyond dessert. Local Loves is where we share the people, places, and small rituals that add a little extra joy to our everyday lives. These are the businesses we genuinely love, trust, and recommend—because community, connection, and supporting one another really do make everything better.

Good Hair Changes Everything
There’s something about a good hair day that just changes everything. You feel more put together, more confident, and suddenly a lot more open to plans. Hair has that kind of effect. So today we’re talking hair and sharing two local businesses we truly love—one we trust with our colour and care, and the other for the hair itself.
Prep Hair

We’ve known Allie and Chelsea for well over a decade, back to our serving days when we were all talking about what our dream businesses might look like someday. Watching them build Prep Hair into what it is now has been such a full-circle moment. Plus, they’re sisters and co-owners and we’re sisters and co-owners, so there’s an instant kinship there!
Prep is where we go for colour (they are so good at blonde) and for extension maintenance. We see Paige and more recently, Chloe, but honestly, everyone there that we’ve seen over the years has been amazing. It’s one of those places where you can relax because you know you’re in good hands (just check out their 1300+ 5 star reviews on Google).
They also just opened their brand new space and it is stunning. Bright, modern, thoughtfully designed, and still somehow cozy. It feels elevated without being intimidating, which is exactly how the experience there feels too. More than anything, we admire how intentional Allie and Chelsea are. About their team, their space, and the way they care for their clients. It shows in every detail.
Osix Hair Extensions

Let’s talk extensions.
We’ve been wearing some version of hair extensions for almost 20 years (which feels wild to type), so we’re very particular. We know when hair looks good at first but doesn’t hold up. And we definitely know when it feels right.
We started wearing Osix Hair Extensions within the last year, and the quality immediately stood out. The hair is soft, natural-looking, and wears beautifully over time. It blends seamlessly and actually feels like your own hair, which is kind of the whole point.
Osix is locally owned, and the quality really speaks for itself. The hair is ethically sourced, thoughtfully made, and designed for real life. It’s the kind of hair that makes you forget you’re wearing extensions at all. For reference, we wear beaded wefts with a few K-Tips around the face, but Paige (or your stylist at Prep) will always help you figure out what works best for your hair and the look you’re going for.
Make Your Appointment Sweet
Next time you're at Prep for any kind of appointment, from extensions to a cut or colour, be sure to make your appointment special with some Jenna Rae Cakes macarons. In our most popular flavour— salted caramel— your appointment will be extra sweet from start to finish.

Quick Lightning Round with Prep Hair
Q: How did you get started in this industry?
Chels went to hair school because she was feeling “artsy” (lol). Allie was travelling in Europe, and Chels basically said, “You need to come home, we’re opening a salon because there’s nowhere for me to work.”
And then… boom. We fell in love with owning a business and have loved every step of building it together ever since.
Q: What’s one hair mistake you wish more people would stop making?
Cutting bangs when we both know they’re not about to follow a single styling instruction we give them. Not one. Not the little blow-dry and round brush. No products. Nada. Haha
Q: If you were visiting Winnipeg for one day, what are some must-go spots?
Breakfast at Sals. Prep for a blowout JRC for snacks to then bring to eat at the forks and sit by river with a glass of Chardonnay.
Q: What’s your favourite restaurant in the city?
Currently BABYBABY - loving their lobster pasta - if it’s still on the menu.
